چکیده

Results from two land surface models participating in the PILPS 2(e) experiment [the default European Centre for MediumRange Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) scheme and a modified version labeled MECMWF] are examined. Modifications are implemented in the parameterization of snow sublimation, albedo ageing, surface runoff, and soil hydraulical coefficients. Results of a third run, SECMWF, in which the snow changes were incorporated but the runoff and soil changes were not, were also included in the analysis. Comparison of the model results to observed catchment averaged discharge and the hydrological balance inferred from it showed a pronounced improvement of the annually averaged partitioning of precipitation over evaporation and runoff. The changes were mainly a result of a reduced snow sublimation by an increased aerodynamical resistance. Comparison to measured discharge from individual calibration basins revealed that the surface runoff parameterization resulted in improved temporal dynamics of discharge from the mountainous Abisko catchment, but it deteriorated results from the low Lansjärve basin. This was not only due to a miscalibration of the surface runoff parameterization, but probably requires an appropriate estimation of deep bottom drainage. Local calibration of soil hydrology appears mandatory for obtaining a better temporal characterization of discharge. For the basin simulations considered, annual averaged runoff is fairly insensitive to the partitioning of runoff over a surface component and a deep drainage term. D 2003 Elsevier Science B.V. Impacts of model calibration on high-latitude land-surface processes: PILPS 2(e) calibration/validation experiments

In the PILPS 2(e) experiment, the Snow Atmosphere Soil Transfer (SAST) land-surface scheme developed from the Biosphere–Atmosphere Transfer Scheme (BATS) showed difficulty in accurately simulating the patterns and quantities of runoff resulting from heavy snowmelt in the high-latitude Torne–Kalix River basin (shared by Sweden and Finland). This difficulty exposes the model deficiency in runoff ...

Simulation of high-latitude hydrological processes in the Torne–Kalix basin: PILPS Phase 2(e) 3: Equivalent model representation and sensitivity experiments

The Project for Intercomparison of Land Surface Parameterization Schemes (PILPS) Phase 2(e) showed that in cold regions the annual runoff production in Land Surface Schemes (LSSs) is closely related to the maximum snow accumulation, which in turn is controlled in large part by winter sublimation. To help further explain the relationship between snow cover, turbulent exchanges and runoff product...

Variable infiltration capacity cold land process model updates

The Variable Infiltration Capacity (VIC) macroscale hydrologic model is distinguished from other Soil–Vegetation– Atmosphere Transfer schemes (SVATS) by its focus on runoff processes. These are represented via the variable infiltration curve, a parameterization of the effects of subgrid variability in soil moisture holding capacity, from which the model takes its name, and a representation of n...

Developments in the MOSES 2 land-surface model for PILPS 2e

Improved representations of snow processes in vegetation canopies and snow hydrology are implemented in the Met Office Surface Exchange Scheme 2 (MOSES 2) land-surface model. Snow falling on forests is partitioned between interception and throughfall; the intercepted snow is removed by sublimation, melt and unloading. A reduction in sublimation of wind-blown snow through trapping by shrubs is s...

A new snow scheme for the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) land surface model has been tested and validated. The scheme includes a new parameterization of snow density, incorporating a liquid water reservoir, and revised formulations for the subgrid snow cover fraction and snow albedo. Offline validation (covering a wide range of spatial and temporal scales) includes s...
